Greetings from Nichola Maasdorp No4 Clinic in Elgin, Moray, Scotland! Today, we're delving into the topic of fine lines and how to treat them. We understand that fine lines are a natural part of the ageing process, but we also believe in embracing age gracefully and taking a holistic approach to skin care. In this article, I'll share with you some of the exciting treatments we offer and our philosophy when it comes to rejuvenating your skin.

As we age, our skin goes through various changes, and one of the most noticeable signs is the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. While there's no way to completely turn back the clock, we can certainly help you look and feel your best with our innovative treatments.

Botox – A Tried-and-True Solution to Treating Fine Lines

At Nichola Maasdorp No4 Clinic, we offer Botox, a well-known and effective treatment for fine lines. Botox works by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause wrinkles, allowing your skin to smooth out. It's a fantastic option for those looking for a quick and relatively painless solution to fine lines. Our experienced team ensures that the treatment is safe and tailored to your unique needs.

Moving Towards Regeneration

Exciting things are on the horizon at our clinic! We're currently in the process of expanding our treatment options to focus more on skin regeneration. I'm personally enrolled in a course with the Institute of Cell Regeneration, and I can't wait to share the benefits of these cutting-edge techniques with you.

Exosomes and Microneedling – A Dynamic Duo

One of the exciting new treatments we're offering is the combination of exosomes and microneedling. Exosomes are a revolutionary way to reduce fine lines and stimulate collagen production. They contain growth factors that promote skin regeneration, leaving you with a more youthful and vibrant complexion.

When combined with microneedling, the results are even more impressive. Microneedling creates tiny micro-injuries in the skin, encouraging your body to produce collagen and elastin naturally. The addition of exosomes enhances this process, resulting in smoother, firmer skin.

Target Cool Carboxytherapy – A Refreshing Boost

Another component of our Fine Lines Package is Target Cool Carboxytherapy. This treatment involves the use of carbon dioxide gas to improve circulation and oxygenation in the skin. By promoting blood flow to the treated area, carboxytherapy helps to rejuvenate the skin and reduce fine lines. It's a safe and effective option for those looking to refresh their appearance.

Our Holistic Fine Lines Package

Now, let's talk about our comprehensive Fine Lines Package, which combines microneedling with Xcellaris Pro, carboxytherapy with Target Cool, and exosomes. We're also providing you with a two-month supply of our Collagen Activation Pack and SPF to ensure your skin remains nourished and protected.

Fine Lines Package:

Priced at £1532, this package is designed to address fine lines holistically, focusing on both the external and internal aspects of skin health.

In the pursuit of flawless and radiant skin, sometimes a single treatment may not be enough to achieve the desired results. That's where the magic of combination treatments comes into play. At Nichola Maasdorp No4 Clinic in Elgin, Moray, Nicci and Su understand the transformative potential of combining various aesthetic treatments to enhance the health and beauty of your skin. So let’s explore Nicci and Su’s concept of combination treatments and how they can deliver outstanding outcomes for your skin, amplifying the effects of individual treatments and providing a comprehensive approach to skincare.

The Science Behind Combination Treatments:

Combination treatments at Nichola Maasdorp No4 Clinic are designed to harness the synergistic benefits of different procedures. By combining treatments, Nicci and Su target multiple skin concerns simultaneously, working at various levels to maximise the overall effectiveness. Let's take a closer look at some popular combination treatments offered at our clinic:

Hydrafacial and Radio Frequency Endymed 3D DEEP and Wrinkle Relaxing Treatments:

The combination of Hydrafacial and Radio Frequency Endymed 3D DEEP is a powerful duo that offers both deep cleansing and skin tightening benefits. Hydrafacial is a non-invasive treatment that exfoliates, hydrates, and nourishes the skin, while Radio Frequency Endymed 3D DEEP stimulates collagen production and tightens the skin. Together, they provide a comprehensive solution for rejuvenating and revitalising your complexion. Add a treatment of Wrinkle Relaxing Treatments and voila, you will look and feel like you again.

IPL Skin Rejuvenation with Hydrafacial and Wrinkle Relaxing Treatments:

To address pigmentation irregularities, sun damage, and signs of ageing, we combine Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Skin Rejuvenation with Hydrafacial and Wrinkle Relaxing Treatments (WRT). IPL targets specific skin concerns, such as age spots and redness, while Hydrafacial deeply cleanses and hydrates the skin. The addition of Wrinkle Relaxing Treatments helps to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, resulting in a more youthful appearance.

Microneedling and Hydrafacial with Wrinkle Relaxing Treatments:

For those seeking significant skin rejuvenation and collagen stimulation, the combination of Microneedling and Hydrafacial with Wrinkle Relaxing Treatments is an excellent choice. Microneedling creates microchannels in the skin, promoting collagen production and enhancing product absorption, while Hydrafacial replenishes moisture and nutrients. Wrinkle Relaxing Treatments complement the effects by reducing the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles.

The Power of Combination Treatments:

Combining treatments at Nichola Maasdorp No4 Clinic offers numerous advantages. Firstly, the different treatments target various skin concerns, working together to provide a comprehensive solution. By addressing multiple concerns simultaneously, you can achieve faster and more dramatic results. Secondly, the combination treatments synergistically enhance the effectiveness of each individual procedure, amplifying their benefits. This approach ensures that you experience the full potential of each treatment, leaving you with healthier, more radiant skin.

The All Skin Med Collagen Activation Plan:

For those looking to take their skincare regimen to the next level, Nichola Maasdorp No4 Clinic offers the All Skin Med Collagen Activation Plan. This comprehensive plan combines the aforementioned combination treatments with specialised collagen activation procedures. Collagen activation plays a vital role in maintaining skin elasticity and youthfulness, and this plan provides the ultimate solution for collagen enhancement, ensuring optimal results and long-lasting benefits.

Why Skin Treatments Are Good For Your Skin

Skin treatments such as Anti-Wrinkle Injections (Botox), fillers, IPL (intense pulsed light), skin tightening and microneedling have become increasingly popular in recent years - and for good reason. These aesthetic treatments can have a positive impact on the appearance and health of your skin.

Anti-Wrinkle Injections (Botox)

Anti-Wrinkle Injections (Botox) is an effective treatment for reducing or eliminating wrinkles, fine lines and crow’s feet. It works by paralyzing the muscles that cause facial expressions like smiling and frowning which can add to the development of wrinkles over time. This facial aesthetics treatment is one of the most popular non-surgical treatments in the aesthetic industry.

Fillers

Fillers are used to enhance the volume of certain areas on the face or body – such as the lips or cheeks – by replenishing lost fat due to ageing. This minimizes signs of ageing like wrinkles and sagging skin. This medical aesthetic treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that can be done quickly, with minimal downtime.

IPL

IPL is a non-invasive laser treatment designed to improve skin tone and texture while also reducing redness, sun spots, scars and other blemishes. It works by targeting pigment cells in the surface layers of the skin with intense pulses of light which causes them to break down. This skin rejuvenation treatment is highly effective and requires no downtime.

Skin Tightening

Skin tightening treatments use radiofrequency waves delivered into the deeper layers of the skin in order to encourage collagen production which boosts the firmness and elasticity of ageing skin – leaving you with a more youthful look! This non-surgical treatment is highly popular among those who want to avoid surgical facelifts.

Microneedling

Microneedling is another effective skin treatment. It involves using tiny needles to puncture the surface of the skin, triggering a healing response from the body which results in increased collagen production. This helps smooth wrinkles and give skin a more even tone, resulting in a healthier, more youthful look. This beauty treatment is highly popular and requires minimal downtime.

These aesthetic treatments can drastically improve not only your appearance but also self-confidence; when you look your best you feel your best. So if you’re looking for a way to refresh your look without resorting to surgery then these treatments could be just what you need!

The excitement of Christmas has faded away, replaced by a new year! We often see this as a new start and a chance to reset, as we abstain from bad foods, alcohol and an unhealthy lifestyle. We start a diet instead or take up running. However, you want to be careful with this ‘new year new me’ philosophy!

New Year New Me: The Big Flaw

There’s one big problem with this mindset – it doesn’t work! Studies show that 23% of people give up on their New Year’s Resolutions after one week, while 43% expect to give up before the end of January. In fact, less than 10% of people successfully continue with their new lifestyle!

‘New year new me’ won’t motivate you for very long, especially after a slip-up. You need a plan for a long-term goal because you can rarely make lasting changes based on an impulse. As a dentist, I believe in making small changes, which culminate in significant improvements.

The Alcohol Example

Take alcohol for example. From a skin perspective, we’re in favour of reducing your intake. Too much alcohol dehydrates the skin and reduces elasticity, leading to fine lines, creases and a dull, dry complexion. It can also give rise to conditions like psoriasis and rosacea, to say nothing of the increased risk of skin infections. On the other hand, going cold turkey can be a mistake. It doesn’t allow any flexibility for what can be a big lifestyle change (depending on how much you’re used to drinking). Similarly, you might be invited to a social event and feel like you’re unable to enjoy a drink, leading to regret, resentment and an eventual return to bad habits.

Instead of being stern with yourself, follow a little-by-little approach. Try giving up alcohol during the week and allowing yourself 3-4 units at the weekend or at a party. It may feel like a little change, but imagine the impact after one, two or three months! You’ll be in a much healthier state, without the inevitable disappointment caused by the ‘new year new me’ attitude.

In Search Of A Miracle

There’s more to January than giving up bad habits. Many of you contact me in the winter, asking me to restore your faces after the festive period. You might be searching for a quick fix, hoping that I’ll turn around and present you with a miracle cure. We have some excellent treatments at No. 4, including luxurious Hydrafacials and healing light therapy, but they’re not magic. I can’t solve all your problems with the wave of a wand or give you an undetectable treatment with no downtime.

We’re not here to transform you into your ‘new year new me’ ideal. We’re here to walk alongside you as you seek to renew your skin and age well. Ageing well takes commitment, much like a New Year’s Resolution, which is why we encourage you to stop and think about the best ways to achieve your goals.

We’re partners, you and me. You trust me to listen to you, identify your main concerns and then come up with a plan. I might direct you to Su’s Skin Program, ideal for investing in your future complexion. Alternatively, I might point you to my own skincare plan, perfect for combating signs of ageing and menopause. Through 12 in-depth sessions, I’ll boost your collagen production, reduce fine lines and soften wrinkles, helping you achieve a healthy, glowing appearance.

The First Step

It still boggles my mind that fine line and wrinkle treatment, using botulinum toxin, can be so effective! More so, it amazes me that over the decades that I have been offering this treatment, more uses keep emerging. From helping depression to boosting skin health, the treatment options available to my patients keeps on growing!

However, the downside can be having to return multiple times a year, which isn’t great if you don’t like needles! So here are some top tips to help you extend the time between your visits…

Choose The Right Provider

Making sure your doctor/dentist/nurse practitioner is experienced will go a long way to ensuring you get the right areas treated appropriately. Some patients are regularly recalled by their injector to get ‘top ups’ but, in my opinion, this shouldn’t be necessary, unless it’s the first time you have been treated by the person.

Of course, your body isn’t always predictable, so occasionally you may require adjustments to your fine line and wrinkle treatment after a few weeks. Having regular ‘top ups’ will make Botox® less effective for you, so it’s important to avoid them if you can.

Ditch Face Scrubs, Masks And Toners

Consider not using face scrubs, masks or toners one week before your treatment. These can alter the chemistry of your skin by causing inflammation, which may result in your fine line and wrinkle treatment being less effective.

Ask About Other Brands

Ask your injector about other brands that might work for you. After many decades, new botulinum brands have now been developed, each with their own characteristics and benefits. This means that, if your regular treatment with the Botox® brand isn’t working as well as you’d like, your injector now has other brands they can try to see if they give you better fine line and wrinkle treatment results that last longer.

Any experienced doctor/dentist /nurse will be able to discuss the alternative brands that are available and give their advice on whether they may be helpful to you.

Use Zinc (With Phytase) To Boost Results By Up To 30%!

In a study by Koshy JC et al. (Journal of Drugs and Dermatol 2012 Apr;11(4):507-12), researchers found that zinc and/or phytase supplementation boosted the effects of botulinum treatments by 30% on average.

‘Surprisingly, the results showed that in over ninety percent of the patients studied, the zinc/phytase combination resulted in a remarkable improved responsiveness to treatment of blepharospasm using the same amount of botulinum toxin as previously used’, said Soparkar, M.D., Ph.D., an oculoplastic surgeon. ‘The toxins seemed to have a greater effect and last longer. Potentially, this could mean using less toxin, offering patients financial savings, greater safety, and more consistent results.’

Remember that this requires some planning, as studies have shown that you have to start zinc supplements 4 days prior to treatment for them to have any effect!

There’s no doubt that injectables like fillers and Botox® are the most effective line-reducing treatments available. Others might help to some extent but they will never achieve what injectables can. Furthermore, these treatments, in the right hands, are very safe and almost painless. The proof is in the sheer number of people who have been treated worldwide! Allergan reports that, as a brand leader in the field of dermal fillers, they recently achieved a major milestone for their key brand Juvéderm with ‘100 million syringes of their product delivered globally’. Isn’t that incredible?

So, Why Isn’t Everyone Choosing Injectables?!

Some of you might be reluctant to try injectables for various reasons. You might feel scared about ‘losing’ your expressions or you’re worried that you won’t look natural and that others will know you’ve visited a clinic… or are you just scared in general?

Rest assured, safety is my top priority when treating my patients. I like to see myself and my team as ‘gatekeepers’.

Gatekeepers, like us, keep you safe and won't recommend a treatment that's not in your best interest, so there’s no danger of you looking ‘overdone’. If a treatment isn’t right for you, we’ll say so! It’s not just about the look though, we also make sure that you’re in the right headspace. The only reason to undergo any of our procedures is because you want to. Don’t ever forget that! Accountable to our registered bodies (the GDC and HIS), we have to act within clear clinical and safety guidelines or risk getting struck off.

How Do You Know Which Clinic To Choose?

In order to be a gatekeeper, you must be properly trained. I have a Level 7 postgraduate OFQUAL qualification in injectables and I’ve been a dentist for years! What’s more, at No. 4, we have fantastic knowledge and experience - Su and I have over 60 years of clinical experience combined (we know, we don’t look old enough)!

The most important thing when choosing your clinic is to make sure the practitioners are fully qualified. The experience never hurts too though!

What To Expect From Gatekeepers

You should always expect the best

Good gatekeepers will always give you all your options and give you time to make your decision as to whether to have treatment or not. We’re not saleswomen, we’re beauty practitioners! We will always conduct a thorough consultation and get to know you first. If injectables don’t suit your medical profile, lifestyle or expectations, we will let you know. After all, we don’t just deal with treatments, we deal with people.

It’s also important that you know you will receive good aftercare. You shouldn’t have your treatment and get kicked straight out of the door! You need to know how to best maintain your results. We’re always on hand to offer advice on which products will suit your skin and my team always want to ensure that you’re happy with your results. In short, you won’t get away from us that quickly…

Ready To Take The First Step?

If you want to get rid of lines and wrinkles, injectables are the best way to do so, but only when you're being treated by experienced, caring professionals.

The first thing to do is book in for your consultation, you can do this easily online. If you’re not quite ready for that, it may be helpful to get to know our clinic better, you can learn more about us on our website or by following us on Facebook and Instagram

Are you one of those people that, no matter what you do or how much sleep you get, you still have tired eyes? The eye area and its surrounding skin can tell us a lot about our health and wellbeing, and is one of the first areas to show the unavoidable effects of ageing. As time goes by, it may become harder to hide when you’ve been playing hard, studying all night for an exam, working long hours, or been up all night with your two year old.

If your goal is to look like a well-rested human being in the morning (and who doesn’t want that), then these are some tips and tricks you may like to try!

Do You Have Puffy, Tired Eyes?

  1. Quit sleeping on your tummy! Try and train yourself to sleep on your side or back as sleeping on your tummy will promote puffy eyes. It can also lead to a stiff neck and possible neck problems later on in life.
  1. Try placing two metal spoons in the refrigerator overnight and applying them as soon as you wake up. Use the spoons to carefully massage from the inner eye to the outer eye in one direction only. The cold helps to elevate swelling and the massage promotes lymphatic drainage to reduce overall puffiness and promote skin health.
  1. Reduce alcohol consumption! A few drinks may seem harmless, but the alcohol will make your blood vessels leaky and cause fluid build up in the skin. If you do drink, make sure you have one glass of water for every drink.
  1. Reduce salt intake. The sodium in salt promotes fluid build up in the tissues and leads to swelling. If you struggle with bloating, then why not eat foods loaded with potassium? These foods, like bananas, cantaloupes (my favourite) or sweet potatoes, will reduce bloating and help you feel better.
  1. Apply caffeine to the eye area. I like to use some cooled tea bags, but you can get eye creams that will do the same job. Caffeine will shrink and firm the skin up. Another thing to try is haemorrhoid cream with phenylephrine. Yes, you heard right! Just be very careful not to get these in your eyes!
  1. Last but not least, you can try our firming and brightening treatment for tired eyes, called Perk. Perk gently removes dead skin cells and boosts hydration whilst brightening and toning the outer eye area. It is a patented technology whereby a specialised tip is used to exfoliate and infuse the skin around the eye with powerful antioxidants, especially Arnica Montana Flower Extract, which specifically helps with inflammation and puffiness.

Are Dark Circles Your Problem?

  1. Swap cucumber slices for potato skins. The skin of the potato contains catecholase, a skin brightener. Just leave them on for 10 minutes twice a day!
  1. Find yourself a good concealer. Yes, dark circles can be hard to cure, so it’s important that you look for a cream-based concealer that’s effective for you. Yellow or peach will neutralise purple shadows. No more tired eyes!
  1. Consider mesotherapy for dark circles. This treatment won’t eliminate them completely, but may make them easier to hide with concealer as it firms and improves the skin under the eye. I use the WOW fusion device with a powerful brightening vitamin C serum.

What About Fine Lines?

  1. Protect and prevent tired eyes first. Take action to prevent the problem worsening - wear sunglasses outside when possible and use a high factor broad spectrum SPF that protects against UVA and visible light as well as UVB. Heliocare has some formulations that are kind to eyes and won’t sting, like their water gel formulation
  1. Use a good anti-ageing eye cream like ALLSKIN MED GF firming eye cream. Its potent growth factor formulation will stimulate collagen renewal and regenerate the skin, whilst tightening active ingredients reduce the signs of skin ageing. Plus, brightening pigments improve the appearance of the eye contour and mattify dark circles!
  1. Consider booking in for a consultation for a Botox® treatment. Botox® will relax tight muscles around the eye, smoothing and improving fine lines and wrinkles. Even better, this treatment has been clinically proven to improve skin condition by stimulating collagen production!

  1. Filler products developed for the eye area are useful too. Placed carefully under the eye muscles, the filler will support and smooth the skin, and, like Botox®, fillers are proven to improve skin quality, skin hydration and boost collagen levels.

Book In And Say Goodbye To Tired Eyes!

Time and time again my clients ask me, ‘Nicci, what happens when my treatment wears off, does everything collapse and will things be worse than before as a result of me having this treatment?’ The answer is a big, fat no! Your Thread Lift, Botox® or Dermal Filler will not only offer stunning results straight after your procedure but also keep your skin looking fresh and youthful in the long run!

How Can These Treatments Offer Long-Term Results?

‘Nicci!’ I hear you cry, ‘how on Earth can my Thread Lift, Botox® or Dermal Filler keep me looking my best after the product has worn off?’ Well, they do so by increasing your collagen synthesis.

Collagen is a naturally occurring protein in the human body. It’s an essential component of connective tissues and it also gives our skin strength and elasticity. Boosting your collagen production means tighter, more youthful-looking skin!

If you know me and my clinic, you’ll be aware that Thread Lift, Botox® and Dermal Filler treatments are my specialities. I focus on them as they are proven to help you age positively. This means you age well, still looking like yourself but better!

Let’s examine the longevity of these options a bit…

Thread Lift Procedures

Longevity:

Threads PDO - 12 to 18 months

Aptos PCL Threads - 24 to 36 months

Predicting the longevity of a thread lift is tricky as they differ so much from one another. This means that it’s really important for you to ask your practitioner about the composite of the thread. My advice is to research the thread being used. Polycaprolactone (PCL) threads offer superior strength and longevity compared to Polydioxanone (PDO) threads, so that’s what I mainly use in my clinic. I also love Aptos threads as they’re coated with hyaluronic acid, which helps to speed up your recovery.

You can expect Aptos threads to last about 1-2 years before the ester bonds that hold them together are broken down by your body’s enzymes, metabolised and excreted by your liver. The variability in longevity is down to your particular circumstances, where the thread is placed and how much stress is placed on them.

Botox®

Longevity:

Botox® injections (for wrinkle reduction) -  3 to 4 months

The breakdown of Botox® is dependent on enzymes that dissolve the molecule and break it down into its component amino acids. These are then either used to build other proteins or excreted by your kidneys. The botulinum toxin molecule is extremely delicate, that’s why it’s broken down so easily and doesn’t last as long as Thread Lift or Dermal Filler treatments.

Dermal Fillers

Longevity:

Dermal Fillers for the lips - 6 to 12 months

Dermal Fillers for adding volume to the face - 12 to 18 months

The longevity of HA Dermal Fillers depends on the chemical bonds that hold them together and their frequency. Without these bonds, the filler chains would be removed from the body very quickly - in less than 24 hours! This means that dermal fillers with strong bonds and more cross-links last much longer.

However, if the filler is injected into a very vascular area such as the lips, the bonds will dissolve rapidly as this area can process it faster. As HA occurs naturally in the human body, once the bonds break down, it is processed and excreted just like your own supplies of HA.

When it comes to Botox, particularly Botox for frown lines, we must consider the chicken and the egg question. What does Botox have to do with chickens and eggs, you may ask? Well, it’s to do with the old question of which came first. The chicken or the egg?

You would think that your happiness is down to your mindset but it just so happens that scientific research points towards the opposite being true. Botox for frown lines has mood-boosting abilities and ridding ourselves of negative expressions, like scowling, can make us happier.

Studies Have Shown…

Coles recently proved this by combining data from 138 studies and over 11,000 participants. The results were exciting as they show that smiling more does actually make you happier, but also that scowling and frowning more will make you feel sadder.

Whatever your thoughts on this study are, it’s my opinion that they show how the mind and body interact to shape our feelings. Unsurprisingly, many factors have been shown to influence our emotions, so you may not be able to smile your way to happiness. However, I’ve witnessed something in my patients who get regular Botox treatments - they smile more and frown less!

Many of my patients have Botox for frown lines. As a result of treating this area, they aren’t able to frown fully, but that’s not to say that they can’t still move their muscles. A ‘frozen’ look would be quite strange - but they certainly can’t scowl anymore. Apart from boosting their confidence levels, this also seems to make them happier!

The Evidence Is Clear

I did some digging and it seems that there is proof that Botox treatments may have other mood-altering effects. In particular, reducing anxiety levels and depression. There are several theories on why this happens and while none of them are proven, what is certain is that patients in these studies benefited from Botox for frown lines.

It seems that my patients are right - their treatments aren’t just for aesthetic purposes, but they also help to lift their mood and give them confidence in the things they do that matter so much to them. Socialising, going for a job interview or even a date night feels different when your mood is better. It’s simply sunshine in a vial!
